Adopt a RoomAlso, we have an Adopt a Room initiative whereby any person or family can volunteer to improve a room or space within the church. Anyone interested in Adopting a Room can e-mail us at office@rvccme.org. Your interest will be passed on to our Trustee Coordinator. Our Church Building and GroundsThough we believe that the most important work of Jesus takes place outside of the walls of any church, our building is still an important gathering place for our congregation and has a long history. Our church has been an integral part of Main Street in Raymond since 1879 when the present sanctuary was built thanks to the Ladies Mite Society, who raised the $2,171.77 it cost. A complete and detailed history of the early Raymond Village Community Church was written by Ernest Knight, a long time church member and Elder. This booklet was written for the centennial celebration and is entitled One Hundred Years of the Raymond Village Church 1879-1979. The church has not had many significant exterior changes over the years though an office and classroom wing and a Vestry were added at later dates. However, the sanctuary has changed over the past 120 years.
The first minister, Rev. William Twort is credited with
the "Trompe L'oeil" (trick of the eye) paintings on the walls and
ceiling of the sanctuary. The paintings were covered over with
paneling for many years, until the original art work was uncovered
around 1990. The church members raised the restoration funds of
$150,000 from members, the community, and friends. Then the sanctuary
was restored to its original beauty by 1993.One can see the original weathervane that adorned the top of the steeple mounted on a wall in the Vestry as well as a large piece of the original trompe l’oeil painting. Original pew deeds now framed also tell of the history of our building. |
